IAN'S PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY
SARAWAK GALLERY INDEX
Sarawak is Malaysia's largest state on the island of Borneo. The romanticism associated with Sarawak as the land of headhunters was only true a few hundred years ago. Today, headhunting is no longer practised as most of the indigeneous people have embraced Islam and Christianity. Traditional and pagan festivals are still widely celebrated although the emphasis is more cultural than religious.
The Ibans, Chinese, Malay-Melanaus, Bidayuhs and the Orang Ulu make up the major ethnic groups in Sarawak. (Orang Ulu is the collective name for the Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, Punan, Punan Bah, Penan, Sekapan, Kejaman, Lahanan and Tanjong sub-groups).
Administratively, Sarawak is divided into 9 divisions: Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang. Each division has its own districts and local councils.
Not to be confused with Kalimantan (Indonesia's portion of Borneo), Sarawak is generally peaceful and progressive.
