IAN'S PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY
VIETNAM INDEX PAGE |
This trip was made in December 1997....a time when Asia was hit by a financial crisis and my life was at an important crossroad. Fresh from the Vietnamese language course that I had just taken in my Masters course, I wanted to put into practice the newly acquired skill.
Vietnam in 1997 was caught in a flurry of change, social and economical. The 20 years of war had taken a toll on her development. Having just become a member of ASEAN, she had a lot to catch up with her more progressive Southeast Asian neighbours. Construction was apparent everywhere while I was there.
Travelling in Vietnam was hassle free and relatively expensive as third world countries go. Travellers' route is almost standard - South to North (and vice-versa) on tourists' mini-vans. (Long distance public buses were almost non-existent and even if they did, it would probably be too cumbersome.) So, it would not be surprising if you keep bumping into the same travellers wherever you go.
