IAN'S PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY

JAPAN INDEX PAGE

Most of the places I've visited in Japan (1995 to 1997) were interspersed between business meetings or extensions from business trips. In Japan this is possible because of the super efficient train system that is punctual and goes to where you want to go. The Japanese rely so much on the punctuality of their trains that most set their watches according to the arrival times of the trains. Even a train travelling a distance from Singapore to Penang can arrive accurate to the minute. This is definitely something hard to beat.

The train system in Japan is a phenomenon and travelling on it completes the Japan travel experience. Nevertheless, I find backpacking in Japan left a somewhat hollow feeling...perhaps due to the efficiency of the entire travel that the element of adventure was missing. Or perhaps it was the language barrier that made communication almost nil. Yep, it can be darn lonely travelling alone in Japan.

Still, the Japan country side is beautiful, where eating had a Zen like quality to it and taking bath (Jap style) was one of my most eagerly anticipated activity of the day. The locals that I come into contact with were friendly and we "clicked" well.

Japan.....I think her imperfectness lies in her perfection....well, almost!
